Livia Zumofen is a transdisciplinary artist, researcher and engineer with a focus on sound, photography and materiality. Her practice operates in the in-between of the arts and sciences. This space is not understood as a divide to be crossed, but as a place worth inhabiting, where new methods and materials, conceptual, instrumental and linguistic, can be formed. A space where prespectives can be transformed, questioned and reimagined. Investigating modes of knowing, attention and relating to ones environment and the self. Thereby, her interest lies in what is usually overheard, overseen and what happens when approaching the threshold of the undetectable.
Trained as materials scientist, engineer and trasdisciplinary artist, with an additional active practice as a musician, composer and photographer, her work grows from years of experience in the laboratory, the studio and in the field. At the center of her artistic practice, microscopy has emerged as method: a mode of listening and attention to the subtle, embracing complexity and interconnectedness. It extends into the construction of microphones, sensors, and instruments, each understood as a microscope, sensor and sounding body in its own right. Through this, microscopy and sound can become reciprocal methods of inquiry, in which the act of observing is inseparable from what is observed.
